Jasmine is a twenty-two-year-old woman who has been homeless since she was sixteen. She first ended up on the streets after running away from her foster home. Orphaned at a young age, she initially stayed with friends but eventually had to leave. She took a train to London, believing it would be easier to survive in a big city. However, she quickly discovered she could not get a job without a fixed address. After her money ran out, she spent her first night sleeping on a park bench. She now moves back and forth between the streets and temporary accommodation. She sometimes stays in hostels or squats, which are often filthy and overcrowded. These places at least provide shelter from the dangerous sub-zero temperatures. On the streets, she sleeps in busy, well-lit doorways for safety. She endures traffic fumes, deafening noise, and a complete lack of privacy. Jasmine survives on a small government allowance, by begging, and by selling The Big Issue. She finds it degrading when people rush past her and refuse to meet her eyes. She explains that homelessness makes you lose your identity, dignity, and confidence. Her greatest dream is to break out of the vicious cycle and finally have a place to call home.
