Brooklyn felt different that night. Not quiet. Not peaceful. Just… watching. The last bell at Franklin Heights High had rung hours ago, but the five of them were still together. Like always. Amir Thompson adjusted the dreadlocks tied at the top of his head and leaned against the brick wall outside the school gym. The streetlights flickered above them. “Elijah, you lost again,” Kevin Gordon said, spinning a basketball on one finger. His mid afro shifted when he laughed. “That’s three in a row.” “It was two,” Elijah Brown snapped, tightening the rubber band at the end of his cornrows. “And you cheated.” “I cheated?” Kevin grinned. “You always do.” Jada Fletcher rolled her eyes, her long natural curls bouncing as she stepped between them. “Y’all argue every Friday like it’s a tradition.” “It is,” Elijah said. Nia Smith stayed quiet, sketchbook tucked under her arm. Her mini afro caught the light as she glanced down the block. Something felt off. “You hear that?” she asked softly. They paused. No cars. No people. Just the faint hum of something underground. “Probably the subway,” Amir said. But even he didn’t sound convinced. ⸻ They weren’t supposed to be on that side of Atlantic Avenue. Everyone in the neighborhood knew that abandoned stairwell near the old deli had been closed for years. Rusted gate. Chained shut. Except tonight? It was open. The chain hung broken. “That wasn’t like that before,” Jada whispered. Elijah grinned. “Well, guess we found our Friday adventure.” Kevin frowned. “Or a reason to mind our business.” Amir stared into the darkness below. “Five minutes,” he said. “We look. We leave.” They descended the stairs. Each step echoed too loud. The air grew colder. The platform below was spotless. Too spotless. Lights flickered overhead, buzzing faintly. No graffiti. No trash. No signs of age. “This is not abandoned,” Kevin muttered. “But nobody’s here,” Elijah shot back, stepping forward. Nia hugged her sketchbook tighter. There were symbols carved into the walls. Circles. Lines. Five shapes connected in the center. Amir walked closer to the edge of the tracks. “No train schedule. No sound.” Jada’s chest tightened. “I don’t like this.” Elijah spun around dramatically. “What, you scared?” “I’m not scared,” she said. “I just—” His foot caught something. A metal bar hidden between cracks in the concrete. He stumbled forward. “Yo—!” CLANK. The lever slammed down. Everything went silent. Then— The ground shook. The lights went out. Nia screamed. A deep mechanical rumble vibrated through the platform. Dust fell from the ceiling. Kevin grabbed Jada’s arm. “We need to go. Now.” But it was too late. The tracks split open. Metal groaned as something massive rose from beneath the earth. A train car. But not like any subway train they’d ever seen. This one was black. Smooth. Covered in glowing blue symbols. It rose slowly until it locked perfectly onto the tracks. Steam hissed. The doors slid open. No driver. No sound inside. Just darkness. Their hearts pounded in sync. “You pulled that,” Kevin said to Elijah. “I didn’t mean to!” Amir stepped forward cautiously. “This wasn’t random.” “How you know?” Elijah asked. Amir looked at the symbols on the wall. Five shapes. Five of them. “It feels like it was waiting.” Jada grabbed his arm. “Waiting for what?” The lights flickered back on. But now they glowed blue. A gust of cold air rushed from inside the train. Nia felt it wrap around her like fingers. “Guys…” she whispered. “It’s calling us.” “Calling us?” Kevin repeated. “We don’t even know what that is!” “It’s a train,” Elijah said, trying to sound brave. “It’s not a train,” Jada said quietly. Amir took one step toward the open doors. His chest tightened. Fear. Curiosity. Something deeper. Like standing on the edge of a cliff. “You don’t have to,” Nia said. He looked back at them. “If this is meant for us… running won’t stop it.” Elijah laughed nervously. “Man, that sounded heroic.” Kevin shook his head. “We are not getting on that thing.” The doors beeped. Soft. Warning-like. As if they were about to close. “Five minutes,” Amir said again. Elijah grinned. “Race you inside.” Before anyone could stop him, he ran into the train. “Idiot!” Kevin shouted. Jada cursed under her breath and followed. Nia looked at Amir. “You really think this is for us?” He nodded slowly. “Yeah.” They stepped inside. Kevin groaned and followed last. The moment his foot crossed the doorway— The doors slammed shut. Hard. The platform lights died completely. The train jolted forward. But there were no tracks moving beneath it. The windows turned pitch black. Like they were falling through space. Jada grabbed a pole. “It’s not on the rails!” Kevin pressed his hands against the glass. “We’re underground… but not moving like a train.” Elijah laughed — half excitement, half fear. “Yo, this is crazy!”
